My Birth Story

She's finally here - Mira Joss Garcia! Born Monday, Oct. 29 at 12:34am; 6lbs, 7oz; 19 1/4in.

Sunday, Oct. 28 at 7:15am, I felt my water break while sleeping in bed. I ran to the bathroom and grabbed by "What to Expect When Expecting" book to make sure it was my water that broke. Sure enough it was. I went back to bed and waited for Mark to wake up. I tried going back to sleep, but of course, could not. A few minutes later, Mark rolled over in bed and rubbed his eyes. I asked if he was awake and told him I that I thought my water broke. We called my OB and, of course, he told us to go to the hospital. Mike Phi was over at the house and was suprised at how calm we were, getting ready to go to the hospital. I took a shower, we packed the car with all our stuff and headed over to the hospital around 8ish. We were admitted around 9am. At this point I was still not having any contractions. The nurse checked my dilation and said I was only "a dimple" dilated and had a long way to go. A little while later, I was transferred to the Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) room. Shortly after, the nurses put in my IV and started me on a Pitocin drip to get my contractions going. Sure enough contractions started kicking in. At first, they weren't so bad, but since I was induced, they started coming on more frequently and stronger quickly. Pretty soon, they were only ~2 minutes apart and I was only 3-4 cm dilated. At this point, I asked for an epidural. I had planned on getting an epidural, but was hoping to wait until I was 5-6 cm, but with the Pitocin, contractions were coming on so fast, that I didn't have time to recuperate in between. After the epidural, I was all smiles. :)

A couple hours later, and 6 cm dilated, my epidural started to wear off so the anesthesiologist had to come back and give me more. I began getting back contractions because the baby was facing posterior. The nurse had me shift back and forth from my right side to my left side to try to get the baby to turn, but the baby wouldn't move. At 8 cm, the epidural began to wear off again. This time, the anesthesiologist was busy with another patient (there was only one anesthesiologist on the whole floor!) and I had to wait for him to get back to me. It felt like eternity for him to get to my room. My contractions were so strong and coming on so fast! Finally, I got another push of epidural. I could still feel pressure from the back contractions, but they weren't nearly as painful. The nurse checked my dilation again and noticed that the front of my cervix was swelling and the baby was still facing posterior. In addition, I began running a tempurature. The nurse called my OB. I talked to him on the phone and asked that he come in to examine me and advise on what I should do. Upon his examination, he gave me two options: push for another 4-5 hours, which may end up in a c-section anyway due to my swelling, or do a c-section now and get the baby out. It seemed like an obvious choice - I opted for the later. Approximately an hour later, Mira entered the world. And Mark was there for the entire thing and didn't once get quesy - through the epidural, the c-section, and me clenching the hell out of his hands. He did good. :)

And I would do it all over in a heartbeat! Who wouldn't for a beautiful face like this:

Weekly Visits

I know... I've been lagging on updating the blog. Sorry!
A lot has been happening. Not so much with the baby, but in preparation for the baby. I'm now going to the OB every Monday, so he can check on my progress and the progress of the baby. As of last Monday, he checked the estimated weight of the baby and she was ~6lbs 3oz! I was a kind of shocked. I thought he was going to say she was only around ~5+ lbs! This past Monday he didn't check the weight again, but he told me to start thinking about what I want to happen if I don't deliver by week 40, like possibly having an elective induction, which I am considering since I'm small and if the baby is pretty big by 40 weeks.

The last of our 3 baby showers was this past weekend, thrown by my mom, Tita Meds and Carla. Mostly family were there, although Desiree was able to make it from San Francisco and Sungita also made the drive from San Diego. Emma, Ella, Mika, Jessica and Jerry also threw Mark and I a shower at Jerry's house on Sept. 30. All our close friends were there! Emma did such a great job in coordinating everything and made a beautiful scrapbook, which I'm working on putting pictures in (one of my projects while on maternity leave waiting for the baby to arrive :)). Thank you to everyone for the wonderful showers! Me, Mark and the Baby are so blessed to have such warm and loving family and friends to welcome her into this world!

The nursery is pretty much done and all the clothes have been washed and put away. We just need the rocker/glider and then rearrange some of the furniture around. Once that is done, I'll take pictures and post them up so you can all see her room. :) Thanks to Lorna for coming with me to the Pasadena swap meet and helping me pick out the dressers for the baby room! :)

My mom will be staying with us next weekend to make sure we have everthing in place. We'll be spending a lot of the weekend cooking and storing the food in the freezer so Mark and I can easily heat up food to eat once the baby arrives since we probaby won't have time to cook and won't be able to eat out.

That's it for now. Sorry for lagging on updating the blog. I know some of you check it regularly. I've just been busy preparing for the BIG day! :) She'll be here very soon!

The Nursery

I am now going to the OB every two weeks for check-ups. I guess this means I'm getting down to the wire! He didn't do an ultrasound, but just checked on how I was progressing - my weight gain (which he said is perfect! whew! :)), urinalysis and heartbeat of the baby (which is also perfect! :)).
Also, I've been told that walking helps with bringing on labor, so I've starting walking with my girl friend at work 3 days a week. I've found that it's helped position the baby better because I don't get as much back pain and she's laid off of my sciatica since I've starting walking.
Mark and I (with Mike Phi's help ;)) have finally started on the nursery! yay! We cleared out the guest room and moved it to Mark's studio. Mark got kicked out of his studio and most of his animation stuff has moved to the living room and tv room. So now the guest room is the baby's room. Mark assembled the crib and we cleared out half of the closet, so it's starting to come together. I still need to go through the BAGS of clothes we got from Carlo and Zsandra. And now that the baby showers have started (I had one at work last week), I really need to start getting organized! My last day at work is next Friday, so I plan to line the dresser and start putting away her clothes on my first day off work. Lots of stuff to still prepare for.
I'm getting a little nervous about the whole labor/delivery process, but I'm sure everything will be fine.
Mark and I will be going to a 'Baby Beginnings' class tonight at the hospital where we will be delivering. We'll be learning about breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, swaddling, feeding, sleeping, etc. Hopefully it will be better, or at least more interesting and hands-on, than the Baby Birthing class we took for 6 long weeks!

32 Week MD Visit

We had our 32-week visit with the OB on Monday. Our OB took measurements of the baby and estimated that she is now 3 lbs, 13 oz. Also her head is down now, so she's in position and almost ready to greet the world! 8 more weeks to go!

Mommy (aka Grandmama :)) Malu came with us to our OB visit. She took the bus over to our house on Friday and we drove up to San Jose for the weekend. Mark and I went to Tanya's wedding in Monterey on Sat and Mommy Malu stayed with Carlo and Zsandra to see the kids, Jordyn and Zach. Mark and I visited them on Sunday and got some parenting practice before heading back to LA for our OB visit the next morning. :)Here's the most recent picture of Baby-girl Garcia taken at our visit - enjoy! :)

Down to Single-Digit Weeks!

Since there's not much to update on, other than that I'm getting bigger and bigger by the week and baby continues to move around in my belly and stomp on my bladder, I'll probably go down to updating this blog to every two weeks until there is more to write. I'll continue to update the belly pics and the morph, so you can see how huge I'm getting! The party planning has started on the baby showers and I'm excited! We still have not started on the nursery, though. I really wanted to start on it over the long Labor Day weekend, but it was so hot here, we didn't do much of anything except try to stay cool. Temperatures reached ~108 degrees C in our area this weekend! And, on top of that, our power went out on Sunday! We had to leave the house and bring the dogs to OC to try and stay cool. When we got home after midnight, the power was still out! None of us could sleep. Luckily, we (or at least I) did not have work on Monday, because we got zero sleep (including the dogs)! We slept a couple of hours in the car with the AC running! LOL! It wasn't too funny at the time, being over 7 months pregnant in the scorching summer heat.

One thing new that's happened in the last couple of weeks... my belly button has finally popped... I now have an ugly outee... :(

Jello Belly

Okay... so I'm late again on my weekly blog updates (thanks, Desiree for pointing that out :)).  It's been a crazy couple of weeks, especially at work.  Also, my dad is visiting from the Philippines.  He's staying for two weeks and will be leaving this coming Tuesday.  We went to the Pasadena flea market last Sunday and found a dresser for the nursery! :)  It was a successful shopping trip, but, boy was it HOT!!  I would like to go back for more furniture, but we'll have to wait until gets cooler.
This afternoon the baby was moving like crazy.  Mark and I stared at my belly and watched it twitch and move!  It was like the movie Aliens!  Mark tripped out and then started talking into my belly to try and make her move some more. :) We still can't make out hands or feet, but when she moves, it makes my belly look like jello... pretty trippy...
I think we've decided on a name, but we haven't told anyone yet.  We're debating on whether to announce it at our showers.  Although we're still taking suggestions so keep sending us your favorites! :)

Down to Double Digits!

I can't believe I have less than 100 days left to go (only ~3 more months left)! It's gone by so fast! Although, as I enter my last trimester, I have heard this is the longest and the most uncomfortable (considering I have not had any morning sickness). I'm starting to feel that tired feeling again as I did in the first trimester, wanting to nap as soon as I get home from work. I get frequent back pains, which I'm sure will get worse as I get bigger. Mark just bought me a great pregnancy pillow which has definitely helped me sleep better through the night. We've also starting taking a child birthing class, which is teaching me stretching excercises to help with my back and help prepare me for the birthing process.
At my last OB appt last week, unfortunately the doctor did not take an ultrasound. :( We were so disappointed. He said that since there was probably not much growth since the last ultrasound, there was no reason to do one. Although, he promised us one at our next visit. :) He did listen to her heartbeat, which was heathy. :)
We've finally gotten a good handle on our registry. For those of you interested, we're registered at Babies R Us (www.babiesrus.com) and Amazon (www.Amazon.com). :) We don't need too many clothes, especially since Carlo and Zsandra sent over 4 bags of 'hand-me-downs' from cousin Jordyn, including an infant car seat! Thanks Uncle Carlo and Auntie Zsandra!!!! You guys are awesome!!
I was over my mom's house this weekend for dinner, and mom, Tita Meds and Carla all felt the baby move. I had 6 hands massaging my belly and Tita Meds loudly singing "a-choo-chie bon-jing" (whatever that means) to get the baby girl to move! As deafening as it was, it worked and the baby started to move and everyone got excited. :)

Belly Twitches

I'm a week late in updating our blog (sorry!). We've been trying to concentrate on the baby registry since baby shower planning has started at my work and with family and friends. Mark and I have been researching and researching on cribs, strollers, car seats, etc. There's so many different kinds and so many options! It's mind boggling (and can easily get really expensive)!
As for the baby, things have slowed down as far as new, noticeable developments to report. I'm sure it hasn't slowed down for her as she continues to grow and develop inside my belly. :) She continues to get stronger by the day. Mark can definitely feel her now when he puts his hand on my belly. And every once in a while, she'll push hard enough where I'll actually see my belly twitch from the outside (Mark has yet to see it, though)! Most of her movement is still in the lower part of my abdomen since I think she's sitting low, but she's now starting to push and probe up toward the upper part of my belly where I can sometimes see it. :) Brigitte and Maryan even pointed out that my belly is a little lopsided where the right side protrudes a little more where her head sits.
Anyway, we have our next appt with the OB on Monday so I'll probably have more ultrasound pics to post. It will make up for the week I missed updating the blog! :)

Baby Gears Galore!

I had the week off from work this week since my company now shuts down for the entire week of 4th of July. So, since I had some time off, I decided to attempt to start our baby registry. I had done some research on cribs, strollers and car seats - reading my "Baby Bargains" book and doing a little surfing on line. But nothing had prepared me for walking into a huge baby store all by myself. I was so overwhelmed by all the different baby products, brands, styles, etc! From bassinets to cribs to toddler beds; infant car seats to convertible car seats... car seats with the LATCH system, 3-point & 5-point harnesses, etc, etc, etc!!! Holy cow! Talk about overwhelming - I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown! As if it isn't overwhelming enough having a baby for the first time, you also need to be knowledgable on products that are safe, reliable, useful (and don't forget stylish). I was so overwhelmed, I walked out of the store with nothing! I couldn't even decide on what our baby would wear for her first day home. :( What a nightmare.
So, after I told Mark about my experience, he is now helping with the search for the best baby gears. Of course, with Mark's love for cool gadgets, you can imagine the type of baby gear this baby will have! :)
As for an update on the baby, she's still doing gymnastics of some sort in my belly. I've gotten used to the movements now. She's actually moving again now as I'm typing. I'm beginning to think she knows when I'm talking about her! ha!
Starting now, she will probably begin to really pack on the pounds, so I'm bracing myself on how big I'll be getting in the coming months. Can't believe I only have 4 months to go (yikes)!

Movin', Movin', Movin'...

Now that I'm familiar with the feeling of the baby's movements, I'm feeling her all the time! She's pretty active - like a gymnast! Or maybe a future tennis player, like her mom? :) Mark even finally felt her move on Wednesday! :) The first couple of times, he didn't feel anything. Then he felt something, but said it was gas. :| Then he felt the same thing again, and sure enough, he knew it was her! :):):) As a matter of fact, she's moving right now as I'm typing.
Practically my entire belly feels hard now. At times, certain parts of my belly are harder than others, which seems to be where her head is lying (mainly on the right side). I've recently started experiencing some shortness of breath as the baby makes her way up toward my lungs. I've also felt some pressure against my ribs. Nothing too straining, yet, but I'm sure as she gets bigger and stronger, I'm sure it won't be too comfortable.
I was also told that Luis and Bella (Sito's son and daughter-in-law) are also having a girl! Congratulations Luis and Bella!! Our expected due dates are a day apart, so we may even deliver on the same day! Our parents will be really busy come November! haha!

The results are IN!

Mark and I had our detailed ultrasound today and found out that we are having a baby girl!! :):):) We're happy to report that she is doing well - 10 fingers, 10 toes and a healthy heart beat! :) During our ultrasound the baby had the hiccups and I felt it! She was so active - rubbing her eyes and giving us a thumbs up (see first video below). The MD had a little trouble finding out whether she was a boy or a girl since she was so proper and kept her legs crossed during the exam. ha ha! We're taking suggestions on names, so send us a comment with your favorite! Here are the first videos of baby girl Garcia... enjoy!

Greetings from Bali/Lombok!

We arrived at Gili Trawangan island (an island off of Lombok) Friday morning local time. Mark and I took a flight to Senggigi and then a boat for 1 1/2 hours to get to the island. It's really beautiful! Very similar to Boracay - paradise! So relaxing! Mark and I had spa treatments and massages and have been hanging out with a few foreigners we met on the island. We will probably leave back to Bali on Tuesday and head to Ubud for a day or two. Everything is going great!
The baby is doing well. I'm pretty sure now that I have started feeling the "flutters" from the baby. The first really noticable one was when Mark and I were at LAX waiting to leave for Bali. It feels like a rolling push, similar to having gas/indigestion - sort of like a twitch/spasm in your stomach. :) I usually feel it in my lower mid-abdomen. I've also noticed that the lower part of my belly is getting harder. The upper part of my belly (above the navel) is still somewhat soft. We're not able to post a new belly pic from here since we are logging in from an internet cafe and cannot connect our camera. We will upload a new one as well as some vacation pics when we get back to Bali (where we are able to connect to the internet using our own computer).
Hope all is well back in the states!

Destination: Bali, Indonesia

Mark and I will be leaving for Bali, Indonesia tomorrow night as our last big vacation before the arrival of our little bean, who I'm sure will keep us extremely busy for a while before we can take another long exotic vacation. :)
Mark just booked the trip yesterday and we're leaving tomorrow! LOL
We return on Sunday, June 24, and the following day we will have our next appt with the OB to hear the baby's heartbeat and find out whether we'll be buying lots of cute little blue or pink outfits! :) Stay posted as I will be blogging it as soon as I get my hands on a keyboard!
Our last appt with the OB, he did a 4D ultrasound (below). Who do you think he/she looks like so far - Mark or Joy?

From what I've read, I should be feeling flutters any day now if I haven't already. Since I'm not sure what it's supposed to feel like, I may have already felt it, but I'm not sure. I've heard it being described as a 'wave,' 'gas,' 'flutter,' 'butterflies,' etc. I guess once it starts to happen more frequently, I'll recognize it. Hopefully, the baby won't have to punch me in the gut for me to know its him/her and not gas or (in)digestion! :)
Anyway, we'll try to take belly pictures and post on our blog while we're in Bali to keep everyone posted on the growth of the baby/belly and how we're doing. But if we don't have internet access or only have minimal access, we'll just have to catch up when we return.
See you soon!

4 Months of Catch Up

Okay... so I tried starting a journal on a different website before, but got lazy and didn't keep it up. I'll try my hardest to keep up this journal weekly to keep everyone updated on what's going on with me, Mark, the dogs :), and, of course, the baby.

So... to get everyone up to speed... WE'RE PREGNANT!! :) Our expected due date is November 7, 2007.

We found out on Friday, March 16 (day before St. Patrick's Day) - the day Carla, Brigitte, Mary Ann and I went to Vegas to pick out landscaping for Carla and Darrell's house. I wanted so much to tell them that weekend, but was proud of myself that I didn't. This has really been the hardest secret I have ever had to keep!!! It was early in the morning, before getting ready for work, when I took the home pregnancy test while Mark was still asleep. He was up late the night before hanging out with some co-workers so I didn't get a chance to tell him I would be taking a test. He was so passed out, but as soon as I told him I was pregnant, his eyes practically bulged out of his head!!! LOL! I think he was still a little hung over from the night before, but boy... did that sober him up quick!!! LOL!!

Archie was the first person I told since he made me promise him that he would be. And it almost slipped out to my mom because Aiden nearly told her that there was "a baby in Ninang's tummy" when they were talking on the phone! Luckily, she didn't notice - phew!

I immediately made an appt with my MD on March 29, and she confirmed my pregnancy. :) :) :) :) I was so elated! She gave me a list of OBs in the area so I called a couple of them and scheduled an appt for April 20.

On April 20, Mark and I met at the OB after work and I had my first vaginal ultrasound (see poster top right). I think it really hit Mark when he saw the baby for the first time on the monitor. He was so excited! We took our first family photo in the doctor's office. :)

The following weekend on April 28, we scheduled dinner with our families to break the news. We told them it would be for Mark's belated birthday (his b-day is April 1). When we got to the restaurant, we told everyone that it was also an early Mother's Day and May b-day dinner (Mother's day on May 13, Tita Med's b-day on May 1, and Papa and Carla's b-day on May 7). We gave everyone cards with the picture of the ultrasound in them (see video of announcement below). Tita Meds cried! :)

The next day (Sunday), we had a bbq with close friends and announced the news to them. What an eventful weekend!! Then, that Tuesday I announced the news at work. I have a co-worker that is also preganant. She is ~1 1/2 months ahead of me, which is nice so I can know where I will be, how I will look and what will be happening in ~1 1/2 months.

Mark and I have also been taking weekly pics of my belly as it grows. I have posted a separate blog of these pics so you can see the transformation http://markandjoy.blogspot.com/2007/06/belly-pics.html.
